What is an RBL / DNSBL?
A Real-time Blackhole List (RBL), also known as a DNS-based Blackhole List (DNSBL), is a database of IP addresses, domains, or URLs that have been identified as sources of spam, malware, or other malicious activity. Mail servers query these lists in real-time during the SMTP handshake to decide whether to accept, reject, or flag incoming messages.
Major providers like Spamhaus, Barracuda, and SpamCop maintain these lists using automated spam traps, honeypots, and manual reports. Being listed on even one major blacklist can cause significant email delivery failures — with rejection rates exceeding 90% in some cases.
Difference Between IP, Domain and URL Blacklisting
Targets the sending mail server's IP address. Most traditional form of blacklisting. Affects all email sent from that IP, regardless of domain. Common with shared hosting where one bad actor can impact all tenants.
Targets the sending domain name via DBL (Domain Block List) and SURBL databases. More granular than IP blocking. Catches spam from domains even when IPs rotate. Critical for brand protection.
